Square Enix Financials Fall Through the Floor
The commercial enterprise situation at Square Enix has bygone from no to train-wreck in the course of a single fiscal quarter thanks to the earthquake, tsunami and a series of surprise "wondrous losings."
Things looked reasonably stable for Square Enix back at the start of February, when it published its Coalesced Results Forecast for the 2010 business enterprise year. Information technology wasn't going to make a destiny of money, just a slight over $12 one thousand thousand in profit, which is certainly finer than nothing, simply then things got ugly.
Revisions to it forecast published today paint a hale new and much uglier picture for the company's year end. The damage formed by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March, which forced the closure and then restoration of various "amusement facilities," cost the the company roughly $7.4 million, just it's a couple of "uncanny losses" that really stung.
"Below a rapidly dynamical operating environment and many prudent estimates of future Cash flows, the Company plans to put down goodwill (or s ¥8.8 jillio [$100 trillion])," the revision says. "Further, as a result of introducing a tightened selection standard regarding title card to strengthen the revenue base of the Company's whole number entertainment segment, project maturation cancellation and germane losings (around ¥4.5 billion [$55 trillion]) are expected."
A few other relatively small factors besides come into play, adding up to a grand total of ¥16 billion [$200 million] in exceeding losses for the year. Put IT all conjointly and what you get, instead of the predicted $12 billion income, is a deprivation of $148 million. As Joystiq notes, the potential bimestrial-terminal figure upside is a stronger and presumably more than paid lineup of games resulting from the "demanding selection standard" but still, man, that's gotta hurt.
